No one was more surprised than Shane Carwin to learn that his bout with Cain Velasquez was being scrapped in favor of an immediate title shot against UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 in November.
"My manager called late, which is never a good sign," Carwin said. "He told me the news and I was shocked. I was half asleep when I got the call but I was excited and in shock all at the same time. I woke up my wife and I think she thought I was just messing around with her."
The UFC's about-face was completely genuine, however, and now Lesnar (4-1) will do something he's never done in his brief career as a pro fighter: pick on someone his own size.

I've been praying for Shane to get a shot at the title. Never been so psyched to see a fight. The clash of the titans. Like someone else said on this site, it's time for Brock to pick on someone his own size. Giggity!

Win or lose this one Shane, you will have almost every fight fan in the world behind you. This is your time - you have proven yourself in the octagon and truly earned your shot at the title of best fighter on the planet. I will be watching and hoping you do what we all know you can do - and knock Lesnar clean out. You deserve this mate - you are a better man than he is, more humble and have more heart. Go out there and be the champion of the world!

I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS FIGHT!!! I've been wanting this fight to happen for a long time! Ever since Brock Lesnar's disrespectful behavior at UFC 100, I've been dying for someone to step up and give him a well-deserved butt-whippin'. As far as size, agility, wrestling/ground game, and punching power, Shane matches up perfectly with Lesnar. I would also give Shane a slight edge in the speed department. I'm rootin' for Shane to land one of those fight-ending right-hands that put Christian Wellich and Gabriel Gonzaga on Dream Street. Knock 'em out, Shane!
