Shane Carwin Says Bout With Frank Mir Will Be "A Fight To Remember" By Mark Wayne | March 14, 2010
heavyweight contender Shane Carwin's
career resembles an early Mike Tyson's. Carwin is undefeated in eleven pro
fights; even more impressive is the fact that not one has made it past the
first round. Carwin blazed his way into the UFC by earning
submission, knockout, or technical knockout wins over eight opponents. His rise
hardly slowed in the big show as he needed less than four minutes combined to
starch Christian Wellisch, Neil Wain, and the highly regarded Gabriel Gonzaga.
With the manner of his performances, Carwin quickly earned himself a title shot against Brock Lesnar.
That fight would have to wait though; Lesnar was stricken with a rare
intestinal condition known as diverticulitis. With the champ's status unknown
until recently, the UFC scheduled an interim heavyweight title fight between
Carwin and Mir to decide who will take on Lesnar next.
Carwin is an accomplished wrestler on the NCAA Division II circuit as well as an accomplished football player for
Western State College. He holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu jitsu and is
known for his size and heavy hands. He has proven that he will be a tough test
for Mir; and Lesnar if he gets his way. The always respectable Carwin did not
break character in these comments he made for the UFC 111 press
release.
"It's an honor to not only fight for the interim UFC heavyweight title, but to do so against a respected
former champion like Frank Mir,"
said Carwin. "This is going to be a fight to remember for the fans, and I
plan on making it one of my most memorable performances as well. Beating Frank
is going to be a test, but I'm confident that it's a test I will pass with flying
colors."
Mir and Carwin's sure-to-be-exciting matchup will
serve as the co-main event to Georges St. Pierre's title defends against Dan
Hardy at "UFC 111: St. Pierre Vs. Hardy". UFC 111 will take
place on March 27th at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
